SynBERC Scholars of Practice Program
To encourage new collaborative projects that promote the safe and constructive growth of synthetic biology, the SynBERC Scholars of Practice Program welcomes outstanding scholars and practitioners at all career stages and from a broad range of fields to work with us in addressing interdisciplinary challenges in advancing synthetic biology. Scholars of Practice conduct research and write in their areas of interest while interacting with SynBERC practitioners, the broader synthetic biology community, and thought leaders from areas like law, ethics, biosafety & biosecurity, and public policy. The Scholars of Practice Program aims to enhance the work of both collaborating scholars and SynBERC Investigators by providing a shared platform for considering human and environmental concerns more fully within the practice of synthetic biology. This program aims to complement and extend ongoing work in SynBERC's Practices Thrust.
Why partner with SynBERC?
- Keep up with leading developments in the field
- Gain access to a network of leading synthetic biologists across the nation
- Get your work exposed to colleagues in industry and academia
- Participate in SynBERC retreats and events
Program description:
- Potential Scholars of Practice first identify a project focusing on challenges for the practice of synthetic biology.Example projects areas include:
- Assessing and mitigating ecological risks associated with release of engineered microbes
- Identification and framing of environmental, economic or ethically-relevant questions related to synthetic biology product/process
- Exploration of how public attitudes, needs and concerns shape biotechnology design and adoption
- Determination of a property rights framework for a synthetic biology product/process
- Next, the Scholar of Practice partners with a SynBERC Investigator, who will act as a co-sponsor of the proposal.
- The SynBERC Investigator notifies the other SynBERC Investigators about the collaboration.
- Once accepted, Scholars participate in SynBERC's semi-annual retreats (e.g., poster or talk) and other events.
- At project end, Scholars of Practice share the results of their work with SynBERC.
We seek proposals a) with high relevance to contemporary issues in synthetic biology practice, b) that demonstrate a strong desire to interact with SynBERC Investigators working on related areas, c) that transcend traditional disciplinary specialties and methodological approaches, and d) are clear with good prospects for completion. Proposals will be accepted on an ongoing basis, with flexible durations. We do not provide fellowships, but may provide some funding for travel, meetings, etc.
